ARC wants everybody to stay safe this Christmas, we want to share some interesting facts about the Risks of Christmas Trees
We all love a good Christmas Tree however are we all aware of the risks they present and how we can easily rectify some of them by making our homes a little more safer – they are an Insurance Hazard.
Fire is the number one concern when we are talking about Christmas Trees, and most fires are caused because of lightening equipment, decorative lights, a dry tree and placing it too close to a heat cause.
Some of our useful tips are:-
• Make sure your artificial tree is identified as fire retardant
• Turn off all decorative lights when you go out, go to bed etc they can overheat especially if left on 24/7
• If you are using old decorations and lights, get them tested and do NOT use if the wire is showing or broken, make sure none of the light bulbs are loose
• Position your tree away from any heat source including fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents, or Log Burners
• Choose lights and decorations that state “Fire Safe”
One of our greatest tips for a real Christmas Tree is to ensure when you buy it, the tree is fresh and green, the the needles should not fall off when you touch them and if they do, the tree is dry.
When you get your tree home, take an inch or so off the trunk of the tree and get someone who is able to drill a drill a few holes in it, stick the tree in a bucket of water in a cool place and allow it to have a good drink a few d few days before you fetch it into the house.
Keep your tree hydrated whilst it is in your home, if you should lose many needles and the tree starts to turning turn brown simply dispose of it. Amazingly, a 6ft tree neds 1 gallon of water every two days.
